A simple way to choose an activation metric that actually predicts who will pay, and to use it to guide onboarding work.
What activation means
Activation is the first moment a new user gets the value your product promises. Not a login, not a profile filled in: the moment they think “this works for me”.
A good activation metric gives every team the same target for the first days of a trial.
Action, threshold, window
Write it as an action, a threshold and a time window: created a first project and invited one teammate within three days. Each part matters. Without a window, the metric never tells you anything in time to act.
Validate against revenue
Take accounts from the last few months and compare the ones that paid with the ones that did not. Which early actions did paying accounts take much more often? Pick the action that separates them most clearly and that the product can influence.
Revisit the choice every quarter. As the product changes, so does the moment of value.
Aim onboarding at it
Once the metric is set, every onboarding screen should move the user toward it. Remove steps that do not, and measure the share of new accounts that activate within the window.
Watch the steps before it
Activation drops are almost always caused by one step before it. Track those steps separately so you can see which one moved.
Wirey watches the steps leading to activation, explains any drop with user evidence and drafts the fix for your approval.
